This page will be added to as my work develops via my new studio and life in Glen, in the Scottish Borders. I am also working on landscapes at this time, and these are on the landscapes page.

the secret (detail)
Image 1

This is a detail of one of the most important paintings I've finished since moving to Glen. It has taken around one and a half years to finish, and was begun in Edinburgh. As with my most important paintings (e.g. 'Halo of Thoughts'), it has many connotations but none of them are specific or narrative. There is great satisfaction for me in finishing a piece and it simply resonating strongly. A full image of the painting is below, and the work is available for sale -see the Secret Shop page.

the familiars

This piece was painted in parallel with 'the secret', above. On recently completing works, I often cannot translate them concisely; a picture of their meaning and relevance grows as time passes; as I contemplate them, and look back on the context in which they were made. As a more objective view comes to me, of the bigger perspective around their making, I can see the pertinence of gestures, colours, expressions and symbolism/ metaphors.

the visionary

This work developed from a very intensive period in late 2006/ early 2007. The raw beginnings of a series of four paintings came during a conflicting experience of being pregnant but having my partner suddenly dramatically alter his perspective of having children. The turmoil around my subsequent miscarriage took some healing through, but the resulting strength and clarity are visible in 'the visionary', which was completed since in the summer of 2008.

This early painting illustrates how my work forms from dynamic beginnings; there were a series of four of these raw pieces, and this one was initially named 'shouting out my pain'. The series seemed to proved a bridge to my healing; to facilitate the outpouring of the complex mess inside.

This piece of work similarly began in darkness and moved to the light -see below- the rawness of these works was a purging of several layers of grief, having cared for and lost my terminally ill mum the year before, at the same time as gran died. The miscarriage became the gateway to grieving for all my life's losses, and eventually allowed me to come through into an entirely new reality.

couple, bed

I am fond of the balanced intimacy in this painting; there seems to be a yin-yang element, which often comes into the paintings, where there is a mutually-but-positively-dependent cycle between the two figures. I see this work as a development of 'couple working on boundaries', a more stark work in red, black and white, from 2004.

The painting above took flipping ages to finish! It was begun in Edinburgh when I first moved there in 2004 or so, and only finished late 2008 in the glen. This is what it looked like early on, and it shows how the gender and dynamic change so significantly. My work became suddenly much more colourful and light in late 2007, when I learned to drive and was looking at moving out of the high-rise flat and into the country.

This painting is now finished, but called 'the first marriage'- see a detail of it on the Secret Shop page.
